City Council to Hear Zone Change for Canby Townhomes

The Canby City Council has a busy night ahead of them next week, as there will be a number of items needing attention at their next meeting.

Not the least of which will be a ruling on the zone change related to the Canby Townhomes, a proposed development of 38 townhouse units on 13th and Ivy. The Planning Commission and Traffic Safety Commission have both come out in opposition to the change, but City Council will have the final say.

Complicating their decision is the fact that the Canby Townhomes property was mistakenly labeled as commercial/residential (C-R) on city maps, when it is actually zoned R-1. If they reject the zone change now, it could open the city up to liability due to the money the developer spent under the mistaken belief that the property was already zoned C-R.

The council will also:

  • review an an annexation request for 9.5 acres of farm land off Territorial Road northeast of the city, which was previously approved by the Planning Commission.
  • consider the final approval of the first phase of engineering design and other improvements related to the North Quiet Zone, which would allow trains to cross the downtown intersections at Ivy, Grant and Elm streets without being required to blow their whistles.
  • review a minor change to the city’s intergovernmental agreement with the Clackamas County Library District.
  • consider salary raises for the city administrator, city attorney and municipal judge.
