The Canby City Council will meet on Sept. 19 to discuss a contract authorizing engineering services for improvements at the North Quiet Zone. This is part of an ongoing process to establish a quiet zone in downtown Canby for the railroad crossings at Ivy, Grant and Elm streets.
The quiet zone proposal centers, literally and figuratively, on the railroad that runs through the heart of town and forms the north border of the downtown district. Approximately 30 trains use these tracks each day, and they are required by law to sound their horns continuously as they pass through town.
This is for the safety of pedestrians and motorists crossing the tracks, but the city fears the excessive noise may discourage residents from visiting downtown, and thus hamper business growth and development in the area. The decision to grant a quiet zone corridor is up to the Federal Railroad Administration.
The council will also host a presentation by the Canby Fire District on its 10-year, $5 million bond proposal voters will consider in November, and another one by the Heritage and Landmark Commission on its plan for the next two years.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. These meetings are open to the public and are broadcast live on CTV Channel 5.
