Police Beat: Jan.29-Feb. 4

Police Beat for the week of Jan. 29th through Feb. 4th:

On Jan. 30, at 5:30 pm, an intoxicated hitchhiker on South Pine street was cited and released on an outstanding Linn County DUII warrant. Hey — at least he wasn’t driving.

Later that same day, at 7:20 pm, police were called after two suspects unsuccessfully attempted to cash fraudulent bottle return slips at a store on Sequoia Parkway. How hard up for money do you have to be to try to forge a bottle return slip… anyway, officers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver admitted to the traffic infraction, and was given a warning. A passenger, however, was arrested for possession of a concealed weapon.

That night, at 10:32 pm, officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance call. The caller was intoxicated and belligerent, and told police they could not recall what had occurred. Hey, buddy, that excuse has never worked for me, but sure, good luck with that.

On Jan. 31 at 2:00 pm, officers responded to a report of attempted fraud, after someone received an email offering an employment opportunity as a secret shopper. Come on, Canby. We’re calling the police about spam now?

Finally, on Feb. 3 at 2:30 pm, police responded to a report of a fuel theft and property damage at a gas station on SW First Avenue. Officers located the suspect. After further questioning of the suspect and property manager, officers determined that, quote, “no crime had occurred.” Huh. Don’t know what happened there. sounded like a crime to me, but I’m not a crime expert.
