Man in Custody after Police Pursuit, Crash near Canby Grove

A man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after leading police on a high-speed pursuit through Canby, crashing on Knights Bridge Road and fleeing onto the grounds of The Grove Camp & Retreat Center.

Canby Police Captain Doug Kitzmiller tells The Canby Current said the incident began at approximately 4 p.m. when the vehicle, a Nissan pickup, was spotted by a patrol officer on Highway 99E near Territorial Road — driving at approximately 80 mph in a 45 zone.

The driver, later identified by police as 39-year-old David Kalugin Campos, turned onto North Birch and careened toward Knights Bridge Road, where another Canby officer had deployed spike strips.

Kitzmiller says Campos was allegedly driving recklessly and struck several curbs on Birch Street.

“He lost control on Knights Bridge and crashed just past the conference center,” Kitzmiller relayed.

Campos then reportedly fled on foot into The Grove, which is also known as Canby Grove, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

A resident’s Ring home security camera picked up the suspect and shared the video with law enforcement, which provided a location and direction of travel, Kitzmiller says.

An officer stationed near Barlow Road finally intercepted Campos, bringing the pursuit to an end. The suspect failed to comply with officers’ commands and was subdued with a Taser.

“We’re not exactly sure why the suspect ran,” Kitzmiller admits. “He had a valid driver’s license; no warrants.”

Nothing illegal was found in a search of Campos’ vehicle.

Campos was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail on charges of eluding a police officer and attempting to elude, reckless driving and hit and run. Bail is set at $40,000.

Other agencies, including the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, an Oregon City K-9 unit and a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement agent who happened to be passing through town, assisted Canby Police with the pursuit.
