Fire Destroys Vehicle at Knights Bridge Park; No Injuries

Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire at Knights Bridge Park in Canby Thursday.

No one was injured, but the vehicle — a Volvo station wagon — was a total loss.

Canby Fire Chief Jim Davis said the owner was near the river walking her dogs when she heard the telltale crackle of flames. She made the emergency call to summon firefighters to the scene, Davis said.

Firefighters had to work quickly to prevent the blaze from spreading to the surrounding vegetation at the parking area.

The cause is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious. Davis said law enforcement is not investigating, and it is believed to be unrelated to a nearby vehicle fire last week further downriver, in which the body of a 65-year-old Woodburn woman was found.

“There’s no connection at all this,” Davis said. “This appears to be accidental: something under the hood.”

Canby Fire’s engine had to go the long way due to a new weight limit on Knights Bridge that the Oregon Department of Transportation instituted earlier this year. Aurora Fire assisted at the scene.
