Cyclist Suffers Traumatic Brain Injury in Early Morning Car Crash in Happy Valley

A woman suffered critical injuries this week after being struck by a car while riding a bicycle in Happy Valley.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 5:24 a.m. Monday to the intersection of SE 142nd Ave. and SE Sunnyside Road, along with medical personnel from Clackamas Fire District #1 and American Medical Response.

The woman has not yet been positively identified, police said. She is believed to have suffered a traumatic brain injury and was transported by ambulance to an area trauma center.

Based on initial information from witnesses, the involved driver, a second bicyclist who was with the injured woman, and roadway evidence, investigators believe the cyclist was headed north on SE 142nd Avenue when she entered the intersection — failing to yield at a red light. She rode through the red light and attempted to make a left turn, when she was struck by a vehicle traveling west on Sunnyside.

The second bicyclist told authorities that the crash victim had consumed alcohol. She was also not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators.

Anyone with information on this collision is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Tip Line — by phone at 503-723-4949 or by using the online email form. Please reference CCSO Case #19-029710.

The Sheriff’s Office urges cyclists to follow Oregon state law, obey traffic control signs and lights, use bicycle lights, and wear bright clothing and safety equipment with reflective material.
