Canby Man Busted for Armed Robbery at Sunrise Market

A Canby man has been arrested for an attempted armed robbery Sunday night at Sunrise Market, 17186 SE McLoughlin Blvd. in Milwaukie.

Vincent Lee Joseph Melton.
Vincent Lee Joseph Melton, 27, of Canby, faces charges of first-degree robbery, third-degree theft, driving while suspended and failure to appear on a prior charge, related to the incident, which occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m.

Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the convenience store within minutes of receiving the call — but the suspect (allegedly, Melton) had already fled the scene in a white four-door sedan.

Witnesses at the scene said the suspect entered the store and asked the clerk for a few items, before producing a pistol and demanding money.

The suspect grabbed the unspecified items that the clerk had retrieved for him and fled the scene when other customers entered the store, police said. He left without any money.

Deputies reviewed store video surveillance, and a CSI technician from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to process the scene for additional evidence.

Through the investigation, the suspect was allegedly identified as Melton, who was located at the Gladstone Budget Inn. Melton was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor warrant out of Canby based on his failure to appear for a driving while suspended charge.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for Melton’s hotel room — where they allegedly seized evidence of the robbery that had occurred the previous night.

Melton was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail, where he remained as of Tuesday afternoon. His bail is set at $270,000.

Detectives are continuing to investigate this crime. Anyone with information on Vincent Melton and his activities on or around Sunday, Oct. 25, is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office Tip Line by phone at 503-723-4949 or by using the online email form. Please reference CCSO case no. 20-023003.
