Although Canby girls soccer was not able to pick up their elusive first win of the season, the Cougars fought Barlow to a gritty 1-1 draw Tuesday for their second tie of the season.
Canby (0-5-2) started the game strong, drawing first blood to take a 1-0 lead. The Cougars were able to nurse that lead into halftime, their second halftime lead in the past three games.
The girls have not been able to punch in multiple goals in a game this season, but their scores have often come early. In three of their seven games, the Cougs have struck first.
But the second half saw the Bruins dominate the possession clock. Canby’s defense was able to stave off Barlow for the first half, but the second saw a Bruin strike resulting in a goal that tied the game. Canby was able to give one last run, but the score ended with a 1-1 tie.
For the Cougars, the Barlow match serves as a benchmark game. The Bruins would go on to blast Gresham 8-0 on Thursday while Canby got an off day. Hanging tight with a talented team is sure to help the Cougar morale.
The Canby squad has faced a brutal non-league schedule to start the season, but has slowly but surely been improving.
The Cougars will begin their Three Rivers League schedule next week with two road games in two days. On Tuesday, Canby travels to Buckman field to take on the St. Mary’s Blues, before facing off against the Lakeridge Pacers on Wednesday.
