Canby Boys and Girls Swim Teams Make Splash at State Championships

The 6A state swimming championships were held this weekend, and the Cougs sent a boatload of athletes to compete.

Canby’s much-lauded 200 girls medley relay team of Mairen Chard, Avery Keinonen, Kylie Hester and Allison Yancy, finished sixth in the finals, tying their school record with a blistering time of 1 minute, 50.74 seconds.

Chard and Keinonen also qualified and competed in several individual events this weekend. Keinonen qualified for the finals in the 100 fly and shaved two seconds off her personal best in the 200 individual medley. Impressive showing for the freshman with a very bright future ahead of her.

That’s no mistake, Avery Keinonen and Mairen Chard are seeded side by side in lanes 2 and 3 to start heat 2 of the 100 fly! Avery qualifies for finals with a 7th place time! Great job ladies!! #CanbyProud

Meanwhile, the boys relay teams spent all weekend besting expectations.

Seeded last in the prelims, the 400 freestyle relay team of Hunter and Conner DeRisio, Jordan Spencer and Thomas Diggles beat three teams and cut off almost 3 seconds on their seed time, while the 200 medley of Spencer, Diggles, Connor DiRisio and Jack Hayhurst beat two teams and shaved a second off their last time.
