Wayward Sandwiches to Reopen Monday

Wayward Sandwiches will reopen Monday, Oct. 25, after being closed the past week due to a small staff outbreak of Covid-19.

Two employees, both of whom did not have direct contact with guests, tested positive for the novel coronavirus last weekend, prompting the restaurant’s closure. Both have since fully recovered, according to Wayward Sandwiches owner and operator Matthew Morrissey.

All other staff tested negative, Morrissey told The Canby Current Sunday. County contact tracers have not identified any other cases that could be linked to this outbreak, including family members of employees or guests who dined at the restaurant.

Staff members who had close contact with the Covid-positive employees are self-isolating according to the recommendations of county public health officials.

Morrissey said the restaurant will reopen at 11 a.m. Monday with its normal operating hours and menu.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have to close the doors for a little while,” Wayward Sandwiches had said in an Oct. 18 Facebook post. “Unfortunately, we were unable to navigate the pandemic without being affected.”

The new restaurant, which earlier this month had celebrated its one-year anniversary at the Dahlia in downtown Canby, also posted a sign on its front doors sharing the news.

Numerous residents had voiced their support for the popular local eatery on social media, thanking them for their transparency and for taking all necessary precautions — and promising to return for a meal as soon as they can safely reopen.
