Clackamas County officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Wilsonville Tuesday afternoon that left two people critically injured.
According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies contracted to the City of Wilsonville pulled over a stolen car at about 12:30 p.m. near Wilsonville Road and Town Center Loop E, near the Safeway shopping complex and a Wilsonville police station.
At least one of the two people in the car was armed, police say, and the suspects and deputies traded gunfire. Both occupants of the vehicle were shot.
Deputies began life-saving measures and rendered other aid until paramedics with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene. They were taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.
No deputies were injured, but a patrol vehicle was struck by gunfire. The names of the people involved have not been released.
“It was pretty scary. We heard the shots go off and just took cover,” Madison Sims, who works in the area, told KATU News. “It was pretty, pretty gnarly. I’ve never personally dealt with anything like that before, so it was a little nerve-wracking to hear that that happened right outside my shop.”
The involved deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, pursuant to standard policy, and a major crimes team is investigating, along with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office.
Detectives from the Oregon State Police and Milwaukie Police Department are leading the investigation with assistance from Lake Oswego, Canby, Milwaukie and Tualatin detectives.
