Two longtime career firefighters and key leaders for the Canby Fire District have announced their retirements this year. Division Chief Gary and Captain Bunnell will hang up their helmets after a combined more than 60 years of dedicated service to Canby’s citizens.
Division Chief Todd Gary retired on Dec. 31, 2018, but is working back time through this summer. Chief Gary began his career at Canby Fire District as a volunteer and served more than 30 years as a career firefighter. He was promoted to division chief by Fire Chief Jim Davis in 2015. Chief Gary has served the community of Canby with commitment to service and compassion. (Also, he’s awesome, and makes even worse dad jokes than I do.)
Chief Gary also has served as a fire board member for the Molalla Fire District, is an active member of Canby Kiwanis and has participated with the Clackamas County Rodeo Board for years. Chief Gary plans on staying active with Canby Fire and the Canby community in general.
Todd and his wife, Tammy, have two children and multiple grandchildren he loves to spend time with. Chief Gary’s retirement celebration will be at 6 p.m. June 11 at the Canby Fire Station, 221 S Pine St. in Canby.

Captain Robert (Bob) Bunnell has over 28 years of dedicated service to the Canby Fire District. Captain Bunnell has filled the ranks of career Firefighter and was promoted to Fire Captain by Chief Davis in 2016. Chief Davis is extremely proud of Captain Bunnell as he exemplifies the mission statement for Canby Fire.
Captain Bunnell leads by example for all our new firefighters. He pays attention to detail and has been credited treating numerous patents and saving lives. Bob’s most recent multiple alarm fire was responding with TVFR to the three-alarm fire in Wilsonville. Captain Bunnell lives on a large ranch in Sandy, with his wife, Sandi. (I guess he just really likes that name.)
Captain Bunnell’s retirement celebration will be at 6 p.m. May 10 at the Canby Fire Station.
