A volunteer-led community organization has set its second annual LGBTQ+ pride event for later this month at Wait Park after a successful kick-off last summer.
Canby Pride organizers say the June 25 event will be a “vibrant and inclusive celebration of the freedom of love and expression for the entire community.”
“This event aims to foster a sense of unity, acceptance, and understanding among all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, race or background,” one of the local organizers, Amy Vidan, said in a press release. “At Canby Pride, we believe that diversity is our strength.”
The group is committed to creating a safe and welcoming space for all people and promoting the idea that every individual deserves respect, dignity and equal opportunities.
“Canby Pride’s primary objective is to create visibility and solidarity with our LGBTQ+ neighbors,” Vidan said. “We aim to raise awareness, promote understanding, and break down barriers that often exist due to misinformation or lack of exposure. Through visibility, we seek to foster empathy, compassion and acceptance among all community members.”
Canby Pride also hopes to foster a sense of unity and belonging by providing opportunities for community members to get to know one another and build connections.
“Canby Pride is an opportunity for individuals, families, businesses and faith communities to come together and actively contribute to the betterment of our community, creating and fostering inclusiveness for all,” Vidan said.
Organizers thanked the local businesses and organizations that helped make the event possible, including the City of Canby, Jessi LaMain, Art-o-Maddic, Baker’s Prairie Bakery, The Book Nook, Canby Signs and Graphics, DirectLink, Retro Revival, Wayward Sandwiches, Zoar Lutheran Church, the Canby Arts Association, Canby Fire Department and Canby Police Department.
“Their support reflects their dedication to fostering a more inclusive and accepting community, and we are immensely grateful for their partnership,” Vidan said.
Canby Pride will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at Wait Park. The event will feature a wide range of activities, including live music, art projects, games, food trucks, a photo station and more.
“We encourage attendees to come dressed in their vibrant colors and bring their energy, enthusiasm and open hearts,” Vidan said. “Let us stand united, celebrate our differences and create lasting connections that transcend any barriers that may exist.”
