In terms of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, the Canby area heads into phase 1 reopening in about as good a shape as one could hope for: Only one new case was reported in the city during the week ending May 24 — likely, a resident at Country Side Living in downtown Canby, who is the only active case at the long-term care facility at this time.
The news came in the latest weekly report from Oregon Health Authority. Since no new cases had been reported the previous week, this means there has been only one positive diagnosis in the Canby ZIP code since May 10 or earlier.
Neighboring Oregon City also saw a single new case, and is now at 24. Wilsonville saw a comparatively steep uptick — three new cases, for a total of 19. Molalla’s count stood steady at 32.
The numbers continued to rise in Woodburn, though less sharply: up nine for a total of 202 cases — still the highest in the state. Its infection rate of 70 per 10,000 remains more than five times that of Canby’s.
The infection rates — rather than case totals — tell more of the story in smaller neighboring communities such as Hubbard (only 24 cases, but 47.6 per 10,000) and Gervais, whose 46 confirmed cases give it the highest infection rate in the state: 120.6.
Covid-19 has contributed to at least two deaths in Canby — both residents at Country Side, the site of the city’s first and, thus far, only outbreak at a long-term care facility.
The total number of deaths is being reported only by county, not city or ZIP code. As of Thursday, Clackamas has been linked to 11 of the state’s 151 deaths.
