An eighth resident has tested positive for the novel coronavirus at Country Side Living in Canby, a nursing home that serves only residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, and which is the site of the city’s first-known outbreak in a long-term care facility.
The positive result came along with the better news that seven other residents had also been tested — all negative.
Of the eight who have tested positive since the outbreak began on April 18, five are now considered recovered from the disease. Two have died, from complications of Covid-19 and other underlying conditions.
Country Side has now seen a total of 13 confirmed cases of Covid-19. Three staff members have also tested positive and since recovered, as have two “close contacts” the Oregon Health Authority has linked to the facility. Their status is unknown.
Only the resident who tested positive this week is considered an active case at this time. They are receiving care from dedicated staff members wearing full personal protective equipment, or PPE, and being isolated to their room to limit the spread of the virus.
All cases have thus far been isolated to Country Side’s larger north building, which is physically separated from its other licensed facility on NW 2nd Avenue. Staff assigned to Country Side North have not been allowed to enter the south building at any point during the outbreak, and vice versa.
