Girls Soccer Opens Season with Loss, Tie

Starting their season a week later than their male counterparts, Canby girls soccer got their 2021 campaign underway Tuesday with a 1-6 loss at the hands of Lincoln before fighting Adrienne C. Nelson High School in Happy Valley to a 1-1 draw the following day.

The Cougars, whose lineup boasts seven senior leaders, struck first against the newest high school in Oregon. Senior Kathryn Frentress broke through two defenders and chipped a shot over the Nelson goalie to put the Cougs up 1-0 in the 17th minute. Canby headed into the half maintaining their lead.

Nelson would strike on a transition play out of the half, scoring from the 18-yard box in the 47th minute. Canby had a beautiful chance with 11 minutes remaining — launching a shot from within the penalty box, but a brilliant save by Nelson cemented the draw.

The tie means the Cougars kick off their first week with an 0-1-1 record. First-year head coach Roberto Maestretti will see his squad get home-cooking next weeks Canby hosts La Salle Prep and Sunset on Monday and Wednesday.
