At last: Some confirmed news on the opening of Fairgrounds Features. As previously reported, the new drive-in at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds will open Friday, Aug. 28, with the showing of a new movie: The New Mutants.
Tickets will cost $25 per car and can be purchased at Canby Cinema 8 starting at 4:30 p.m. They are also to be available on the theater’s website at some point earlier that day.
Distributed by 20th Century Studios, The New Mutants is the thirteenth and final installment in the X-Men film series and tells the story of a group of young mutants — led by Maisie Williams’ Wolfsbane — held in a secret facility that fight to save themselves.
Originally intended for release in April 2018, the film faced several delays for various reasons, and has become one of the first new Hollywood movies to be released in theaters amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Gates open at 7:30 p.m., and the show starts at 9.
The fairgrounds had hoped to build a permanent drive-in theater this summer in the yellow lot on the property’s northwest corner — which would accommodate an estimated 400 visitors.
But lost revenue from the many canceled events forced them to pivot to a temporary model while they build revenue and support for the build-out of the permanent installment.
The drive-in is located on the fairgrounds proper, where the temporary livestock barn is erected during the county fair. Guests are asked to queue up at the blue lot if you arrive early.
This weekend will also feature the return of the Taste of Fair food court in the red lot, and the modified drive-thru version of the 26th annual Cutsforth’s Cruise-In.
