The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus linked to Canby’s ZIP code has nearly tripled in June, according to the latest weekly report from the Oregon Health Authority.
As of May 31, only 35 cases had been reported for Canby, which included the total number of all residents known to be infected since the outbreak started in March.
Two weeks later, and driven largely by the outbreak at the Marquis Hope Village Post-Acute Rehab center, that number had risen to 98, according to the OHA report, which shared data as of June 14. The city’s infection rate of 43.2 confirmed cases per 10,000 residents is the highest in Clackamas County.
Sixty-three new cases were linked to the Canby ZIP code from May 31 to June 14, but exactly how much of this is due to the outbreak at the Marquis rehab center is not clear.
Marquis Hope Village has seen 69 confirmed cases in residents and staff, and contact tracing of employees’ family members has identified at least 23 more cases that have been linked to the long-term care facility. But staff, family members and short-term residents who live in a different ZIP code would not be reported in Canby’s total.
Neighboring Oregon City has also seen a sharp uptick in new cases lately. Its count has more than doubled since May 31, from 26 to 53 in the most recent report. That represents an increase of more than 17 cases from the previous week.
However, because of its much larger population, its infection rate — 10.3 — remains less than a quarter of Canby’s.
Other cities saw much slighter increases. Molalla saw five new cases and is now at 39, with an infection rate of 25.8 — which is the second-highest rate in the county. Wilsonville gained one new case, from 21 to 22, and has an infection rate of 10.5 cases per 10,000.
Canby is not unique in the state of Oregon, which has seen a steep rise in the overall number of new cases since counties first began reopening a few weeks ago. The data led Governor Kate Brown to temporarily hit the pause button on further reopening last week, and to take new action to curb the spread of Covid-19 this week, including an indoor mask mandate in Clackamas and six other counties.
Covid-19 has contributed to at least nine deaths in Canby — two residents at Country Side Living and seven at Marquis Hope Village.
Total case counts are cumulative, and compiled over the course of the Covid-19 outbreak. Some cases are likely to have recovered, but the exact number is unknown. The OHA does not report deaths, recoveries, hospitalizations, the total numbers tested, or any other demographic information at the level of city or ZIP code.
Most cases of Covid-19 have mild or moderate symptoms, and the vast majority recover. Those who are older or who have underlying medical conditions are at much greater risk for serious complications and death.
If you develop a fever or respiratory symptoms such as a cough or shortness of breath, contact your primary care provider or Clackamas County Health Centers.
