Everyone loves the county fair, which has been held at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby since 1907. But, what should the fairgrounds be used for during the other 51 weeks of the year?
That’s a question the Clackamas County Fair Board is trying to answer in the coming new year as they roll out a new master plan for the fairgrounds and event center, to guide future investments and facility improvements.
An earlier phase of community surveys highlighted the desire to preserve and maintain the historical elements of the fairgrounds and the traditional activities (livestock shows, agricultural events, the annual fair and rodeo, etc.). However, community stakeholders also said they wanted more, to see the fairgrounds used all year round for concerts, beer festivals, home and trade shows, boat shows, birthday parties and weddings, speakers and lectures, camps and so on.
It sounds great, but it’s more than the fairgrounds can do all at once. So the board is coming back to the community for more input. Basically, they’re asking us to prioritize what facility improvements they should be looking at right away, and what can maybe be set on the back burner for a little bit.
