Big news, people: the Clackamas County Clerk’s office has installed new ballot boxes throughout the county during the last several weeks. The new ballot boxes actually do have some new features and improvements, which you may experience during the upcoming elections next month.
- Enhanced security: The new boxes are specifically designed to secure vote-by-mail ballots. The overall design of the boxes will guard deposited ballots from unauthorized access and potential damage from Pacific Northwest weather.
- Increased capacity: Many of these new boxes have twice the capacity of the previous boxes.
- Improved visibility: Flag holders are attached to each box. This allows each box to be equipped with an American flag while the election period is open. This makes each box easily visible to any voter looking for them, and provides a reminder to residents to vote.
- Improved accessibility: The new boxes are designed to be ADA compliant and will be available to the public 24/7 during an election. Many boxes are positioned to allow voters to drive up to the ballot box and deposit their ballot without exiting their vehicle.
“Election security is of paramount importance to me,” said Clackamas County Clerk Sherry Hall, who shepherded the changes. “Residents can rest assured that their ballots are going to be safe and counted.”
Along with the new boxes, some locations have changed, either to improve access geographically or simply to shift them outside. The county is now locating all of its ballot boxes outdoors, so voters can access them 24/7.
