The Canby Cougars football team continues the search for its elusive first win since September of 2017.
It was homecoming week Friday, and the Cougs hosted Lakeridge for a hard-fought game that was close through all four quarters. Ultimately, though, the visiting Pacers came away with the W, 35-28.
Sophomore quarterback Mikey Gibson continued to impress in only his second varsity start. He threw for three touchdowns, to three different receivers: juniors Kaden Boyd and Kyle Sandner, and senior Chance Miller.
The lob to Miller was undoubtedly the most impressive, as Gibson somehow managed to stay upright long enough to make the completion, with no less than three Lakeridge defenders hanging from his torso.

It was not Miller’s only trip to the end zone, either. Midway through the third quarter, Miller took a kick return all the way to the house to keep Canby in the game.
‘We are disappointed in not coming up with the victory, but I am so proud of hard working players and staff,” head coach Jimmy Joyce said afterward. “We still have a long journey ahead, but we are getting better and better each week and that was on display last night. The energy radiating from the stands at last night’s game really makes Canby the best football town in Oregon.”

Sadly, more bad news after the game. Senior captain K’den McMullin had limped off the field after hurting his foot early in the second half. He told friends and supporters on Instagram Saturday that the injury had been diagnosed as a broken bone with partial ligament damage.
“Not quite how I expected the homecoming game to go, but hey, stuff happens,” he said. “I’ll be back out there though, head held high. Love you, team.”
