Clackamas County renters and business owners who are unable to pay rent due to unemployment or lost income related to the coronavirus pandemic will not need to fear being kicked out of their homes or commercial properties.
The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to support a countywide moratorium on commercial and residential evictions related to COVID-19, following the lead of Portland and Multnomah County officials who took similar action earlier this week.
“This is a tough time,” said Clackamas County Chair Jim Bernard. “Businesses are being challenged, and renters are being challenged because they can’t go to work. We ask that business owners and property owners not evict people.”
Commissioner Ken Humberston said all three Portland metro area counties (Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington) are encouraging Gov. Kate Brown to follow suit statewide.
“We don’t want more people on the streets unsheltered who could catch or spread the virus and are erring on the side of caution in all of these decisions,” he said.
