What does it mean to be part of a community? What does it look like when community shows up for someone and vice versa? To what extent are shared values and identities in a community enough or not enough to help us thrive?
Clackamas Community College will explore these questions and more during an Oregon Humanities’ Conversation Project scheduled for 3 p.m. May 16 in Harmony West, Room 170/172. “Showing up: What does it mean to belong to a community?” is a conversation with Chi Mei Tam, hosted by the college’s library department and sponsored by Oregon Humanities.
Tam is an intersex, genderqueer, Chinese American immigrant who grew up in a working-class immigrant family in Oakland, Calif. They are passionate about the intersection between queerness, race and class. Tam’s life’s journey has led them to both the for-profit and nonprofit worlds, and they have both business enterprise and progressive activism experience.
Through the Conversation Project, Oregon Humanities offers free programs that engage community members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to daily lives and the state’s future. This program is open to the community.
The Harmony Community Campus is located at 7738 S.E. Harmony Road, Milwaukie. For more information about this free discussion, contact Jane Littlefield at 503-584-3474 or jane.littlefield@clackamas.edu. Funding for this project was made available by the Clackamas Community College Foundation.
