Canby Music owner Brian Haines has been operating out of his new and much-larger store on the corner of Northwest First Avenue and North Douglas for about nine months — but his fuller vision for the space hasn’t yet come to fruition.
That will happen on Saturday, June 5, when Canby Music celebrates its 13th anniversary with a block party of sorts, including live music, prizes and giveaways, free food, a bounce house for the kiddos (and the young at heart) and special deals in the store.
Ever since he first bought and began remodeling the nearly 100-year-old home in downtown Canby, Haines has envisioned it hosting outdoor concerts and jam sessions on the east porch — the side facing what was once the Grand Central Station restaurant and is now Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies.
The porch was actually wired with lighting and additional hookups for that purpose, he explained.
But, because the new location did not open until September, when the weather was beginning to turn — not to mention Covid-19, the wildfires, the ice storm and, well, everything else — the store hasn’t had a good opportunity to host live music until now.
“It’s finally happening,” Haines said. “It feels good.”
The lineup will feature the Canby Music crew, of course, including Haines and singer/songwriter Aly Whelchel, as well as appearances by other local musicians and students.
“It will be a bit of a hodgepodge,” Haines explained. “Especially for people who play in a band, there aren’t a lot of opportunities in town for them to just come out and jam, play a song or two. So that’s something we want to do more of in the future.”
Haines will also be introducing the two newest members of the Canby Music team, Sky Milano and Christian Engerman, who both teach a variety of instruments.
“Come meet all of us, grab a hamburger and enjoy the great outdoors,” Haines invited.
The Canby Music store’s 13th annual celebration is planned for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5. The menu includes burgers and hot dogs, grilled up on the barbecue.
