A Canby man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash that occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Memorial Day, at the intersection of Highway 170 and South Macksburg Rd, just south of Canby, near Martin’s Town and Country Furniture.
The driver, also the man’s mother, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the driver — Julie Ann Shivley, 54, of Canby — entered the curve too fast, drove off the road, traveled in the ditch for a short time before jumping a driveway and striking a PGE utility pole.
The presence of live power lines on the car made rescue efforts significantly more difficult. Rescue crews used heavy extrication and stabilizing to reach and remove one critically injured patient.
The collision seriously injured the only passenger in the vehicle, the driver’s 21-year-old son, Kieren Shivley, also of Canby. Kieren Shivley was transported by Life Flight to an area hospital with traumatic injuries.
Officers with Canby Police Department were the first to arrive on scene. Canby Fire District, American Medical Response and Clackamas Fire District #1 also responded to the crash scene and assisted.
A Canby PD officer conducted a DUII investigation and determined Julie Shivley was under the influence of alcohol and unable to operate a vehicle safely. She was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for minor injuries and issued a citation in lieu of custody for driving under the influence of intoxicants.
The case was submitted the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of prosecution.
