Canby girls soccer faced La Salle Prep and Sunset this week, dropping both games. On Monday, the Cougars fell to La Salle, 4-1 before losing to Sunset, 0-4, on Wednesday.
The girls’ match against La Salle started off as a close contest, with the score tied 1-1 at the half. From there, the Falcons were able to chip away at the Cougars’ defense.
The Falcons broke the tie with a long, 20-yard shot in the 49th minute. One minute later, the Falcons scored again off of a cross to take a 3-1 lead. A late corner kick resulted in the final La Salle goal of the game.
The Sunset Apollos came to town Wednesday and got on the board quickly, scoring five minutes into the game. The rest of the half was a defensive showcase, as neither team scored and few had opportunities.
However, the second half started in similar fashion to the first, as Sunset scored off of a throw-in after only four minutes of play. The Apollos would tack on two more goals to leave Canby with a 4-0 victory.
Through their first four games of the season, the Canby girls have struggled to convert chances into points, scoring only three goals — the third-lowest in 6A. First-year head coach Roberto Maestretti and the Cougs will hope to be able to reverse trend with road games against Liberty and Forest Grove next week.
