Canby got run over by Newberg Friday night, as the visiting Tigers totaled 385 yards on the ground. The assault was led by super sophomore Price Pothier, who juked, jived and spun his way to 185 yards and five touchdowns, on only 21 carries.

A chilly September drizzle made for a sloppy first half, with several turnovers on both sides. Junior defensive back Tyler Mead was a bright spot on defense, hauling in two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
But while Newberg was able to mitigate the weather’s impact by their success in the running game, Canby was not.
The Cougs managed barely 100 yards on the ground, and the bulk of that was from sophomore quarterback Mikey Gibson, who provided a much-needed spark in the fourth quarter, with Canby trailing 40-0.

The loss dropped the Cougs to 0-4 on the season. And though the team has looked much better this year on both sides of the ball, and has showed new energy, pride and determination that were simply not in evidence most of last season, it has yet to translate to the win-loss column.
After the game, new head coach Jimmy Joyce was quick to take responsibility for what might have been a demoralizing loss for one of the youngest teams in the brutally difficult Three Rivers League.

“Last night was a tough one for us,” Coach Joyce said. “All credit goes to Newberg for playing a physical and hard nosed football game. It took us a long time to wake up and start the fight. Sadly, it was way too late, and that is on me.”
He went on to praise the community and his players.
“These are amazing young men,” he said. “Everyone in our community should be proud of how they represent our small corner of Oregon!”
Unfortunately, the schedule does not get any easier this week, as the Cougs hit the road to face undefeated Tualatin, ranked No. 6 in the state.
