Canby Equestrians Ride to Victory in Final District Meet, With States Approaching Fast

The Canby High School equestrian team wrapped up its regular season on a high note, dominating the final North Valley District of Oregon High School Equestrian Teams (OHSET) meet earlier this month and securing multiple spots for the upcoming state competition in May.

The team’s impressive performance at the Oregon State Fairgrounds from April 13-16 included a number of first-place finishes across various events (results below).

With their sights now set on the 2023 OHSET Championships, the Cougars are poised to excel, boasting a strong roster of competitors across the board. The state meet will take place from May 11-14 at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center, and the Canby team is primed for success.

STATE QUALIFIERS

Leading the Cougs’ individual state qualifiers were Sadie Schweitzer, who earned gold in showmanship, in-hand trail, dressage and barrels; Lola Rice, who took home gold in pole bending and silver in breakaway roping; Madi Bigej, who won gold in individual flags and bronzes in figure 8 and keyhole; and Lexie Williams with a gold in breakaway roping and pole bending, a bronze in figure 8 and also qualifying in barrels.

Other individual state qualifiers included Madison Wheeler, silver in showmanship and in-hand trail; Hannah Smith, silver in saddle seat and Western horsemanship and second alternate in trail; Hayley Smith, bronze in dressage, first alternate in hunt seat and third alternate in barrels and figure 8; Hailey Magenheimer, bronze in showmanship and in-hand trail; and Addie Heinemann, bronze in saddle seat and first alternate in in-hand trail.

Several duos will also compete on their sport’s largest stage in the state, with Hannah Smith and Hayley Smith earning silver in working pairs and Sadie Schweitzer and Hailey Magenheimer nabbing bronze in the same event. Sadie Schweitzer and Madison Wheeler also won bronze in two-man birangle, with Hannah Smith and Hayley Smith winning first alternate.

The Cougar riders also impressed in team events. The quartet of Hannah Smith, Sadie Schweitzer, Hailey Magenheimer and Madison Wheeler claimed gold in in-hand obstacle relay, while Loryn Gomes, Hayley Smith, Addie Heinemann and Katie Weideman will be first alternates.

The team of Hannah Smith, Madison Wheeler, Sadie Schweitzer, Hailey Magenheimer, Madi Bigej and Addie Heinemann also took home the gold in drill state.

In team versatility, Hannah Smith, Sadie Schweitzer, Hailey Magenheimer and Madison Wheeler won silver; and Loryn Gomes, Madi Bigej, Hayley Smith and Addie Heinemann earned first alternate.

Finally, the teams of Madison Wheeler, Sadie Schweitzer, Madi Bigej and Addie Heinemann; and Hannah Smith, Hayley Smith, Hailey Magenheimer, and Cloie Surgeon earned silver and first alternate, respectively, in the Canadian flag race event.

TRI-RIVER VALLEY LEAGUE HONORS

The Cougar riders also took home a number of league honors, including High Point Individual Versatility: Sadie Schweitzer (first), Addie Heinemann (third), Madison Wheeler (fifth) and Hayley Smith (seventh), and High Point Individual Performance: Hannah Smith (fourth), Sadie Schweitzer (fifth), Addie Heinemann (eighth) and Hailey Magenheimer (10th).

Addie Heinemann took home third, Lexie Williams fourth, Hayley Smith fifth and Lola Rice ninth in High Point Rookie of the Year, while Sadie Schweitzer (first), Madison Wheeler (second), Hannah Smith (third), Hailey Magenheimer (fifth) and Addie Heinemann (10th) did so in High Point Team Contributor. Madi Bigej placed second and Lexie Williams fourth in High Point Individual Timed.

NORTH VALLEY DISTRICT MEET 3 RESULTS

The Cougs finished the regular season in fine fettle in the state capital earlier this month, placing many talented riders in a wide variety of events. Sadie Schweitzer led the way again, winning first in showmanship, dressage and in-hand trail, and second in barrels.

Hannah Smith placed first in saddle seat, third in showmanship, fourth in trail, fourth in Western horsemanship and fifth in hunt seat; Addie Heinemann nabbed first in saddle seat, second in in-hand trail and eighth in barrels and figure 8; and Lexie Williams claimed first in breakaway roping and pole bending, second in figure 8 and third in barrels.

Second-place event finishers included Hailey Magenheimer, second in showmanship, third in in-hand trail, seventh in working rancher, ninth in barrels and 12th in Western horsemanship; Hayley Smith, second in dressage, sixth in hunt seat, seventh in Western horsemanship and 10th in figure 8; and Lola Rice, second in breakaway roping, fifth in keyhole and eighth in steer daubing.

Other top finishers included Madi Bigej, third in figure 8, fourth in barrels, sixth in individual flags; Madison Wheeler, third in showmanship; fifth in in-hand trail; fifth in figure 8; Cloie Surgeon, third in keyhole; Loryn Gomes, sixth in showmanship and dressage; ninth in hunt seat; 12th in working rancher.
