A 22-year-old California man drowned at Scotts Mill City Park in Marion County Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies say children were swimming in the water at the base of the falls around 3 p.m. when they spotted what appeared to be a man underneath the water.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team responded to the scene and recover the body of an adult male. He was found in approximately eight feet of water directly below the falls.
The name of the victim will not be released until family can be notified.
“Our thoughts are with family during this tragic time,” Marion County authorities said in a press release.
The cause of the drowning is still under investigation, but authorities said no further information is expected to be released.
The sheriff’s office says this is a strong reminder that even with the summer weather, the heavy flow of the water and cold temperatures can still make swimming in the rivers very dangerous.
Residents are urged to be mindful and use extreme caution when swimming and always swim with another person.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Silverton Fire Department and Scotts Mills Fire Department assisted Marion County deputies at the scene.
