Ballots have been mailed to registered voters living in Canby and Clackamas County for the November mid-term elections.
Canby residents have four races to vote on, but they’re all unopposed. Mayor Brian Hodson is seeking a fourth term, while councilors Greg Parker and Tracie Heidt are also seeking re-election. They are joined by newcomer Shawn Varwig, owner of Judson Roy Home, an interior design and home staging company in Lake Oswego. He will take the seat currently held by Councilor Tyler Smith, who is not seeking another term.
Voters in Canby and the surrounding areas will also weigh in on a $4.9 million general obligation bond proposed by the Canby Fire District. The expected cost would be 28 cents per $1,000 assessed value, or about $78 a year for the average Canby home. If approved, the bond would be used to remodel the district’s new existing firehouses and build a new medical response station on the north side of town, as well as replace aging apparatus and equipment.
There are three openings for Clackamas County offices, only two of which are contested. For assessor, the choice is between incumbent Tami Little, who was appointed to the position in May after serving in the assessor’s office for over 34 years, and Mike Grant, a current Clackamas County commercial and industrial appraiser and former assessor of Clatsop County. For clerk, incumbent Sherry Hall faces former Canby School Board member Pamela White. The county’s current internal auditor, Brian Nava, is running for Treasurer unopposed.
Statewide, Gov. Kate Brown faces a tough reelection big against Republican challenger Knute Buehler, and voters will also consider five ballot measures, covering everything from grocery taxes to Oregon’s sanctuary state law.
Drop-off locations are outside the Canby Civic Building and Public Library on Second Avenue, and a new one on Sequoia Parkway at Arneson Gardens, which is located behind Fred Meyer.
Ballots must be returned by Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. to be counted. If you are mailing yours in, please remember that you do need to use a stamp.
