Woman Found Guilty Except for Insanity in Killing of PSU Athlete Brother

Overview of the Case

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Multnomah County judge has ruled that 37-year-old Tamena Jaceeta Strickland is guilty except for insanity in the 2019 killing of her younger brother, Portland State University athlete Deante Strickland. The case also involved injuries to two other family members.

Details of the Incident

The shooting took place on August 2, 2019, when Deante, just 22 at the time, was fatally shot. Two other relatives — his grandmother and aunt, both named Shirley Strickland — were also injured. According to officials, the violence deeply affected the Portland State community and shocked those who knew the family.

Sentencing and Mental Health Ruling

With the guilty except for insanity verdict, Tamena Strickland has been committed to life under the Psychiatric State Review Board (PSRB). Alongside this, she received a 22-year prison sentence that will run concurrently.

In a statement, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office explained that her placement could change depending on her mental health status. If the PSRB later determines that she no longer requires hospitalization during her 22-year term, she would then serve the rest of her sentence in the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Aftermath and Arrest

Authorities said that after the shooting, Tamena briefly left the scene but turned herself in to Portland police later the same day with the assistance of her attorney.

Final Court Decision

On Thursday, the court found her guilty except for insanity on the charge of second-degree murder and guilty of two counts of second-degree attempted murder for the injuries caused to her relatives.
