WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Capitol Police have launched an investigation after what officials described as “a vile and deeply inappropriate symbol” was discovered in the office of Republican Representative Dave Taylor of Ohio.
Although Taylor’s office did not specify what the symbol was, Politico reported that an American flag altered with a swastika was found inside the congressman’s Washington, D.C., office, prompting the immediate involvement of Capitol Police.
Congressman Condemns the Act
In a public statement released Tuesday, Rep. Taylor expressed outrage over the discovery and distanced himself and his staff from the offensive image.
“I am aware of an image that appears to depict a vile and deeply inappropriate symbol near an employee in my office,” Taylor said. “The content of that image does not reflect the values or standards of this office, my staff, or myself, and I condemn it in the strongest terms.”

He added that he had “immediately directed a thorough investigation alongside Capitol Police,” and confirmed that the probe is ongoing. The office, citing the sensitive nature of the matter, declined to provide further details until the investigation concludes.
Described as “Vandalism”
In a press release accompanying Taylor’s statement, the congressman’s team referred to the incident as an act of “vandalism.” The language suggests that the offensive display may have been placed deliberately within the office, though it remains unclear who is responsible or how the symbol came to be there.
Capitol Police have not yet issued an official comment. When contacted by CNN, the agency’s public information office responded with an automated message noting that it is closed for routine operations during the ongoing government shutdown.
Broader Implications
The discovery comes amid heightened tensions in Washington over displays of extremist imagery and rhetoric. Symbols associated with hate groups, particularly Nazi imagery, have repeatedly surfaced in political contexts in recent years, prompting swift condemnation from both sides of the aisle.
If confirmed, the appearance of a swastika in a congressional office could raise serious questions about security protocols and internal oversight within the Capitol complex. Lawmakers and staffers have previously reported threats and vandalism tied to political polarization.
For now, Rep. Taylor has emphasized full cooperation with investigators and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a professional and respectful workplace. “This office represents the people of Ohio with honor,” Taylor said. “We will not tolerate symbols of hate or actions that seek to divide.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and no suspects have been identified as of Thursday.
