The Canby Center is entering a new era of growth and service as it expands its team, enlarges its facility, and deepens its commitment to uplifting local families. The nonprofit recently welcomed Whitney Govert as its new Director of Development, marking a major step forward in its mission to renew dignity and inspire learning.
A Season of Growth and Renewal
“For more than 16 years, The Canby Center has focused on restoring dignity and inspiring learning for local families,” said Dan Drazan, board chair. “Welcoming Whitney represents another milestone in this exciting season of growth.”
Founded on the belief that love and community connection can transform lives, The Canby Center offers data-informed programs addressing both practical and emotional needs. These include weekly food and clothing distribution, academic support through tutoring and mentorship, and school-based programs that help students build character and confidence.

“Poverty in America is a relational problem,” explained Executive Director Ray Keen. “That’s why our programs focus on relationships that restore hope and stability.”
Building Community, One Relationship at a Time
Govert joins The Canby Center with extensive experience in fundraising and leadership. She previously helped more than double annual revenue at a Willamette Valley winery and now brings her expertise to support the center’s growing $1.9 million budget for 2026.
“The Canby Center offers a hand up, not a handout,” said Govert. “We believe every person has something to offer. When neighbors help neighbors, doors open to a thriving future.”
Each program participant volunteers at least one hour per month, reinforcing a sense of belonging and shared purpose. “Every program and volunteer here communicates that people matter,” Govert added. “Dignity isn’t given—it’s rediscovered.”
A Model for Other Communities
The Canby Center’s work is drawing attention as a model for other communities across Oregon. Its expanded facility, set to open this fall, will allow it to serve even more families and expand its programs.
Former development director Steve Nelson, now serving part-time as senior development officer, praised Govert’s early impact. “Whitney joins us at a pivotal moment,” he said. “Her leadership is already making a difference.”
