Sherwood Police Release Video of Rooftop Rescue Involving 9-Year-Old with Autism

Sherwood, Ore. (KPTV) — Sherwood police have released newly shared footage showing officers safely rescuing a 9-year-old boy from the roof of a home. The incident happened about a month ago, but the boy’s parents gave permission for the video to be made public as a teaching moment for families and the community.

Multiple 911 Calls Prompt Quick Response

According to police, several people called 911 after noticing a young boy running along the roof of a residence. Callers also reported that the child was on the autism spectrum. Officers were dispatched immediately and arrived within minutes.

Upon reaching the scene, police say they were able to calm the boy and convince him to sit in a safe spot on the roof while waiting for firefighters. A ladder truck was brought in, allowing crews to bring the child safely back down to the ground without injury.

A Teachable Moment About Autism and Safety

The boy’s parents agreed to the release of the video to help others understand how children with autism may react in certain situations. According to police, children on the spectrum sometimes gravitate toward heights, water, movement, or unfamiliar spaces. This can be due to curiosity, sensory needs, or difficulty recognizing potential dangers.

Police note that it’s not uncommon for children or adults with autism to wander, run from stressful environments, or move toward something that captures their interest. These behaviors can seem sudden or unpredictable to others but are often connected to sensory overload or an attempt to find comfort.

Officers Emphasize Calm, Patient Communication

Sherwood police used the incident to highlight how important calm communication is when interacting with someone on the autism spectrum. Officers stress that individuals with autism may respond differently when they are frightened or overwhelmed. This can include shutting down, running, resisting help, or engaging in repetitive behaviors.

They added that approaching with patience and a steady, reassuring tone can make a significant difference in keeping the person safe and preventing panic.

Continued Awareness and Community Support

Police say incidents like this underscore the need for awareness across the community. Understanding sensory challenges and safety risks can help prevent dangerous situations and guide first responders, teachers, parents, and neighbors in the right approach.

Thanks to quick action from both police and firefighters, the 9-year-old boy was reunited safely with his family. Authorities hope the shared video will encourage greater understanding and preparedness when supporting children and adults with autism.
