Ross Island Bridge Closed in Both Directions During Emergency Response

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The Ross Island Bridge was shut down in both directions Saturday evening as first responders worked to assist a person in distress.

Emergency Response Initiated

According to Portland Police, officers and firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after 5 p.m. when reports came in about an individual in crisis on the bridge. Crews quickly established a safety perimeter while assessing the situation.

Authorities confirmed that both eastbound and westbound lanes were closed to traffic to allow emergency personnel to work without interference. The closure caused delays for evening commuters, with vehicles diverted to nearby bridges.

Public Safety Priority

Police said the decision to close the bridge entirely was made out of caution, ensuring the safety of the individual in distress as well as the public. Fire and rescue crews remained on-site, coordinating closely with law enforcement to bring the situation under control.

Officials did not release additional details about the nature of the emergency or the condition of the person involved, citing privacy concerns.

Traffic Impact

The Ross Island Bridge is a key connection across the Willamette River, linking southeast Portland to downtown. Its closure in both directions caused backups on surrounding routes, including the Hawthorne and Marquam bridges, as drivers sought alternate crossings.

Transportation officials advised motorists to avoid the area and use detours until further notice. TriMet also reported potential delays on bus routes that rely on the bridge.

Ongoing Situation

As of Saturday evening, the bridge remained closed while responders continued their work. Police urged the public to remain patient and allow emergency crews the space they need to safely handle the situation.

Updates are expected as authorities release more information.
