Portland Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber in Old Town

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A late-night armed robbery in Portland’s Old Town ended with the swift arrest of a suspect carrying a defaced firearm, police said.

Robbery Reported Near Old Town

The incident occurred around 11:33 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, near Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest Davis Street. According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), officers responded to a report of an armed robbery involving a handgun.

Swift Police Response

Officers quickly obtained a detailed description of the suspect from witnesses at the scene. Within minutes, they located and detained a man just two blocks away. The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Anthony Santiago Rivera.

Police said Rivera was armed with a firearm that had its serial numbers removed, a violation that further escalates the seriousness of the case.

No Injuries Reported

Authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the robbery or the subsequent arrest. The rapid response and apprehension prevented what could have become a more dangerous encounter in one of Portland’s busiest districts.

Charges Filed

Rivera now faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Robbery in the First Degree

  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm

  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm

The charges reflect both the alleged robbery and the discovery of the defaced weapon. Rivera was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center following his arrest.

Ongoing Investigation

The PPB noted that the investigation is ongoing and more details may be released as the case develops. Detectives are working to determine how Rivera obtained the firearm and whether it may be linked to other crimes.

Old Town Safety Concerns

The arrest comes at a time when Old Town continues to face heightened concerns over crime and safety. City officials and community leaders have been working on initiatives to improve public safety in the neighborhood, which is home to restaurants, nightlife, and social services.

Police emphasized that Saturday’s quick resolution demonstrates the importance of community cooperation in reporting crimes and providing accurate suspect descriptions.
