Portland Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Klickitat County

Klickitat County, Wash. – A 25-year-old Portland man died Monday afternoon after a motorcycle crash along Highway 142 in Klickitat County, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Crash Details

The fatal crash occurred around 1 p.m. near milepost 22 on Highway 142, a rural roadway known for its sharp curves and steep drop-offs. Investigators say the motorcyclist, operating a Yamaha FZ6, failed to negotiate a curve.

The motorcycle continued straight off the road, plunging down a steep embankment. The bike struck multiple trees before finally coming to rest roughly 30 feet below the roadway.

Victim Identified

The rider was identified as Austin R. Whittington, 25, of Portland. Despite wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Whittington suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed no passengers were on the motorcycle, and no other vehicles were involved.

Cause of the Crash

While investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role, speed is believed to be a primary factor. WSP continues to review evidence and witness statements as part of its ongoing investigation.

Dangerous Stretch of Road

Highway 142 is a winding route through Klickitat County, popular among motorcyclists for its scenic views but also regarded as hazardous due to its sharp curves and sudden elevation changes. Local authorities have repeatedly urged riders to exercise caution on the stretch where the crash occurred.

Community Impact

News of Whittington’s death has left family and friends grieving both in Portland and in the greater Columbia River Gorge area, where many Portland riders often travel for recreational rides. His passing adds to a growing number of motorcycle-related fatalities in the Pacific Northwest this year, underscoring concerns about rider safety on rural highways.

Safety Reminder

The Washington State Patrol reminded drivers and motorcyclists alike to adhere to posted speed limits, especially on rural roads where conditions can change quickly. Even with proper safety gear such as helmets, high speeds and roadway hazards can prove deadly.

Next Steps

As of now, no further details have been released. WSP is expected to issue a full crash report once the investigation concludes.
