Missing Hiker Found Safe by Multnomah County Search Teams

PORTLAND, Ore. — A hiker who went missing Thursday in Multnomah County was found safe early Friday morning after search crews launched an overnight operation.

Search and Rescue Response

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) confirmed that its Search and Rescue (SAR) teams were deployed after receiving a report of the missing individual. Crews began searching the area Thursday evening, coordinating efforts to locate the hiker before nightfall made conditions more difficult.

According to MCSO spokesperson John Plock, the 71-year-old man was successfully located about 20 minutes after midnight on Friday.

Condition of the Hiker

Officials reported that the man was discovered safe, uninjured, and in good spirits despite the ordeal. Plock added that the hiker was able to walk out with the assistance of rescue teams and did not require medical treatment.

Importance of Preparedness

While details of where the man was hiking and what led to his being reported missing were not immediately released, MCSO used the successful recovery as a reminder of the importance of hiking preparedness.

Authorities recommend that hikers:

  • Always let someone know their planned route and expected return time.

  • Carry essentials such as water, food, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone or GPS device.

  • Be mindful of weather changes and trail conditions, especially in areas with limited cell service.

Community Gratitude

Local residents expressed relief at the news of the man’s safe return. Multnomah County has seen several high-profile search and rescue operations in recent years, particularly in the Columbia River Gorge, where hikers can quickly become lost or injured on steep and rugged terrain.

The Sheriff’s Office praised the quick response of its SAR teams, which are often made up of both deputies and trained volunteers who respond at all hours to assist those in distress.

Conclusion

Though the hiker’s disappearance prompted concern, the swift recovery underscores the value of community resources dedicated to outdoor safety. For the 71-year-old man and his family, the incident ended with the best possible outcome: a safe return home.
