PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) — The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) is investigating a fatal assault that occurred in downtown Portland on Sunday night, leaving one man dead and prompting a homicide investigation.

According to police, officers were first called around 9 p.m. to a southwest Portland hospital to assist with what initially appeared to be a medical emergency. Upon arrival, they learned that the patient—a man who has not yet been publicly identified—had been the victim of an assault that took place roughly an hour earlier in the 300 block of Southwest 4th Avenue, a busy area in the city’s downtown core.
Despite medical efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries around 11 p.m., police confirmed.
