‘Large-Scale’ Retail Theft Mission Nets 29 Arrests in Clackamas County

PORTLAND, Ore. – A coordinated law enforcement effort targeting organized retail theft led to 29 arrests and the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen goods, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.

10-Hour Operation Targets Retail Hotspots

The “large-scale” retail crime mission took place on Thursday, with deputies focusing on major shopping areas including Clackamas Town Center, Clackamas Promenade, and multiple stores along 82nd Avenue.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 10-hour operation was designed to disrupt organized theft groups and address related criminal activity in high-traffic retail zones. Deputies monitored store exits, contacting individuals suspected of stealing merchandise, as well as others believed to be involved in criminal activity nearby.

Stolen Goods and Warrants

By the end of the mission, law enforcement had arrested 29 individuals. Officials said 17 of those arrested had outstanding warrants in addition to the new charges.

Deputies also recovered more than $3,500 worth of stolen merchandise, which was returned to participating retailers. The operation highlighted how shoplifting cases often intersect with other crimes, including drug offenses, fraud, and probation violations.

Growing Concern Over Retail Theft

Organized retail theft has become an increasing concern for businesses across Oregon and the country. Store owners and law enforcement agencies alike report that theft rings are becoming more coordinated, often stealing in bulk to resell goods online or through illegal networks.

The financial impact extends beyond store shelves, with costs frequently passed on to consumers through higher prices. Local officials say large-scale enforcement efforts like Thursday’s mission are crucial to protecting both businesses and the community.

Sheriff’s Office Statement

In a release, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing the issue. “During the 10-hour operation, law enforcement contacted individuals suspected of theft and other crimes as they exited stores, along with others believed to be involved in criminal activity in the area,” officials said.

Deputies credited the success of the mission to coordination with local retailers, security teams, and other regional law enforcement agencies.

Looking Ahead

Authorities indicated that similar operations are planned in the future as part of a broader strategy to combat organized retail theft. While Thursday’s mission recovered thousands of dollars in stolen property, law enforcement leaders emphasized that the effort is also about deterrence — sending a message that theft and related crimes will not be tolerated in Clackamas County.

For now, 29 suspects face charges ranging from theft to outstanding warrant violations, and retailers in the targeted areas have regained some confidence after a proactive day of enforcement.
