Filing Opens for Clackamas County Justice of the Peace Position

Clackamas County Elections, based in Oregon City, has officially opened the filing period for candidates interested in serving as the next Justice of the Peace. This announcement follows the upcoming retirement of Judge Karen Brisban, who will step down from her position effective January 1, 2026.

Temporary Appointment Before Election

To ensure continuity in the role, Governor Tina Kotek will appoint a temporary replacement to serve until the 2026 election cycle. This interim appointee will fulfill the duties of the office until voters select a permanent candidate.

Election Timeline and Term Details

The Justice of the Peace position will be featured on both the May 19, 2026 Primary Election ballot and the November 2026 General Election ballot. The candidate who wins the election will begin a six-year term, continuing the long-standing tradition of judicial service within Clackamas County.

About the Justice of the Peace Role

The Justice of the Peace oversees matters such as traffic violations, small claims, landlord-tenant disputes, and other minor civil cases. The position plays a vital role in ensuring fair access to justice at the community level.
