Fentanyl Branded with 49ers Logo Seized in Portland Drug Trafficking Operation

PORTLAND, Ore. — Federal prosecutors say multiple people have been arrested in connection with a fentanyl trafficking network that transported large quantities of the drug from California to Portland. The investigation led to the seizure of several bricks of powdered fentanyl uniquely stamped with the San Francisco 49ers logo, a mark authorities say was used to brand the illegal product.

Multi-State Drug Operation Uncovered

According to court documents, investigators began tracking a cellphone number believed to be linked to several individuals involved in the operation. The number, used by a person known as “Josh,” became a key lead in the case. Portland police obtained a geolocation warrant for the phone, allowing them to follow its movements from California into Oregon.

Authorities say the investigation revealed a coordinated effort to distribute large quantities of fentanyl throughout the Portland metro area. The drug, often disguised or mixed with other substances, has been tied to a rising number of overdoses across Oregon and the West Coast.

Two Vehicle Stops Lead to Arrests

After weeks of surveillance, law enforcement stopped two vehicles connected to the tracked number. Inside, officers discovered several bricks of fentanyl wrapped in packaging and marked with the 49ers team logo, which prosecutors said traffickers used as a recognizable brand identifier.

Four people were taken into custody in connection with the stops. Their names have not yet been publicly released pending formal charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cassady Adams confirmed the details in court filings, saying the suspects were part of an organized network responsible for moving fentanyl in bulk from California to Portland.

Deadly Drug and Community Impact

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin, has become a leading cause of fatal overdoses in Oregon. Authorities say traffickers often press or mix fentanyl into counterfeit pills or powdered forms, making it nearly impossible for users to know the potency or composition of what they are taking.

The Portland Police Bureau and federal drug task forces have made several major seizures in recent months, underscoring the ongoing crisis. Law enforcement officials warn that the presence of branded fentanyl—such as the 49ers logo—illustrates the drug trade’s growing sophistication and marketing tactics.

Ongoing Federal Investigation

The suspects are facing potential federal drug trafficking charges as the investigation continues under the joint direction of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Oregon, DEA, and Portland Police Bureau. Authorities say more arrests and indictments are possible as they work to dismantle the supply chain behind the branded fentanyl shipments.

Prosecutors emphasize that fentanyl continues to pose one of the gravest public health and safety threats in the region, with the Portland area remaining a major distribution hub for the deadly synthetic opioid.
