Elderly Portland Woman Suffers Severe Injuries After Liquor Store Theft on Halloween

An attempted theft at a Southeast Portland liquor store on Halloween night left a 73-year-old woman critically injured after she tried to stop the suspects from fleeing, according to Portland police.

Violent Theft on Southeast Powell Boulevard

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at a liquor store located in the 5100 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard, police spokesperson Mike Benner told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Three people reportedly entered the store, grabbed merchandise from the shelves, and attempted to leave without paying. When the store’s owner, identified by her family as Anna Hyde, confronted them outside, the encounter turned violent.

Owner Dragged During Escape Attempt

According to Hyde’s daughter, Jennifer Fuller, who shared details on social media, her mother chased after the suspects into the parking lot and reached into their vehicle in an attempt to stop them.

The suspects slammed the car door on Hyde’s hand and sped away, dragging her across the gravel lot before she was able to break free. Fuller said the force of the incident caused catastrophic injuries.

Severe Injuries and Critical Condition

Hyde sustained multiple serious injuries, including a fractured skull, broken femur and hip, broken shoulder and hand, and a brain bleed, according to her daughter.

As of Monday, Hyde remains in critical condition at a Portland hospital. Fuller said her mother is awaiting multiple surgeries, but doctors must first ensure that the brain bleed has stabilized enough for her to safely undergo anesthesia.

Investigation Ongoing

Police said the suspects fled the scene and have not yet been identified or arrested. The case has been turned over to the Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crimes Team, which continues to investigate.

Authorities have not released descriptions of the suspects or their vehicle but are urging anyone with information about the theft or the individuals involved to come forward.

Community Shock and Concern

The attack has sparked outrage and sympathy across the community, with many expressing support for Hyde and her family. Friends and customers described Hyde as a longtime neighborhood business owner who was known for her kindness and dedication to her store.

Fuller thanked the community for its prayers and messages of support as her mother continues to fight for recovery.

“She’s the strongest woman I know,” Fuller wrote. “We’re just praying she makes it through her surgeries and comes home soon.”

Police Appeal for Information

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts in hopes of identifying the suspects. Anyone with information about the Halloween night theft is asked to contact Portland Police.
