Driver Hit, Killed After Fleeing Traffic Stop and Crossing I-5 in North Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — A late-night police traffic stop in North Portland ended in tragedy Saturday when a driver fled officers, crashed his car, and was fatally struck while running across Interstate 5.

Traffic Stop Turns Fatal

According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), the incident began just before 11 p.m. on North Rosa Parks Way. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and sped away.

Police emphasized that officers did not pursue the fleeing car. Moments later, the vehicle crashed near the I-5 South on-ramp in the area.

Attempted Escape on Foot

After the crash, investigators say the driver abandoned the damaged vehicle and attempted to cross I-5 on foot. He moved through the southbound lanes and into northbound traffic, where he was struck by a passing vehicle.

The man died at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Driver at Scene Cooperating

The motorist who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators, police said. Authorities have not reported any signs of impairment on the part of the driver.

As of Sunday, no charges or citations have been issued.

Investigation Underway

PPB’s Major Crash Team responded to conduct a full investigation. Detectives are working to piece together the sequence of events, including why the original stop was initiated and the circumstances that led the driver to flee on foot across the interstate.

Police have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact investigators. Witness accounts and potential surveillance footage could help clarify unanswered questions.

Dangers of Fleeing Traffic Stops

Authorities stressed that incidents like Saturday’s highlight the risks associated with fleeing law enforcement. Crossing active freeway lanes on foot is especially hazardous, both to the person attempting it and to unsuspecting drivers.

The Oregon Department of Transportation has repeatedly warned of the dangers of pedestrians on high-speed roadways, where visibility and reaction time are limited. Collisions in such cases often prove fatal.

Community Response

While police have not released details about why the stop was attempted, the outcome has already raised concern among local residents who live near the I-5 corridor in North Portland. Crashes and pedestrian deaths along Portland’s highways remain a recurring safety issue.

Community members say the tragedy underscores the need for both accountability during police encounters and broader strategies to prevent desperate flight situations.

Call for Information

The PPB is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the driver’s actions before the collision to come forward. Tips may be critical in understanding the full context of the incident.

A Night of Tragedy

What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a fatal chain of events — a refusal to stop, a crash, and a desperate run across one of Portland’s busiest freeways.

For investigators, the focus now is on finding answers. For the community, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement and the perils of crossing freeway traffic on foot.
