Deputy Rescues Injured Owl in Clark County, Now Recovering at Portland Veterinary Hospital

VANCOUVER, Wash. (KATU) — A barred owl is on the road to recovery at a Portland-area veterinary hospital after being rescued by a Clark County Sheriff’s deputy last week.

According to officials, a concerned citizen called the Clark County Sheriff’s Office after spotting the owl standing motionless in the middle of a roadway. Fearing the bird might be injured, they reported the sighting to authorities for help.

Deputy James, who was on patrol nearby, quickly responded to the call. Upon arrival, he found the owl appearing disoriented and unable to fly. Acting swiftly, the deputy carefully removed the bird from the road to prevent it from being struck by passing vehicles.

The injured owl was then transported across the Columbia River to a Portland veterinary hospital that specializes in wildlife care. Veterinarians there are currently evaluating and treating the owl for possible injuries.

Officials said the owl is now in stable condition and receiving proper medical attention. Once fully recovered, wildlife experts plan to release it back into its natural habitat in southwest Washington.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office commended the deputy for his quick thinking and compassion, noting that his actions likely saved the owl’s life. Wildlife rehabilitation specialists also thanked both the deputy and the citizen who made the call, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in protecting local wildlife.

Barred owls are native to the Pacific Northwest and are known for their distinct “Who cooks for you?” call. They are nocturnal hunters and play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling rodent populations.

Authorities remind the public that if they encounter injured or distressed wildlife, it’s best to contact local animal control or wildlife rescue organizations rather than attempting to handle the animal directly.

Thanks to a quick response and coordinated rescue, this barred owl is now getting the care it needs — and will soon have the chance to soar again over Clark County’s forests.
