Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested After Southeast Portland Shooting

Arrest Made in Hazelwood Neighborhood

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 43-year-old man, identified as Michael Anthony Howard Jr., was arrested Thursday night in connection with a shooting earlier this month that left one person seriously injured in Southeast Portland.

At approximately 9 p.m., members of the Portland Police Bureau’s Enhanced Community Safety Team, along with the Crisis Negotiation Team and drone unit, executed an arrest and search warrant at a residence in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

During the operation, police recovered a firearm from the home, which was seized as evidence.

Details of the Shooting

The incident occurred on October 16 around 8:18 p.m. in the 3500 block of Southeast 157th Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple serious gunshot wounds in a parking lot.

Emergency responders transported the victim to a local hospital, where he remains hospitalized but is expected to survive, according to authorities.

Charges Filed Against the Suspect

Following his arrest, Howard was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He faces several felony and misdemeanor charges, including:

  • Second-degree attempted murder

  • First-degree assault

  • Unlawful use of a weapon

  • Felon in possession of a firearm

  • Recklessly endangering another person

  • Two city code violations for possessing and discharging a loaded firearm within city limits

Ongoing Investigation

The Portland Police Bureau continues to investigate the case. Detectives are urging anyone with additional information about the shooting or the suspect to contact Portland police.

Officials say the arrest demonstrates the department’s ongoing focus on reducing gun violence and bringing accountability in violent crime cases throughout the city.
