TEEN WOUNDED IN HARLEM SHOOTING, POLICE HUNT TWO SUSPECTS

New York, US:A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot in Harlem late Wednesday evening, prompting a major manhunt as detectives search for two individuals believed to be involved in the attack. The shooting has reignited community concerns about gun violence among youth in the neighborhood.

Shooting Near Busy Harlem Block

Police said the incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. near West 143rd Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, a busy intersection known for shops and restaurants. The teenager was reportedly walking home from a nearby recreation center when he was struck by gunfire during what witnesses described as a sudden altercation between two groups.

According to authorities, multiple shots were fired, and the teen collapsed on the sidewalk as bystanders rushed for safety. Responding officers from the 32nd Precinct found the victim unconscious with a wound to the chest. Emergency Medical Services transported him to Harlem Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Witnesses Describe Chaos

Local residents said the scene turned chaotic within seconds. Several witnessed people running in different directions as gunfire erupted. A store owner nearby said the sound startled everyone inside, adding that the street had been relatively calm before the violence broke out.

Neighbors expressed frustration, noting that the area has seen a spike in violent incidents in recent months. Many parents in the community said they worry about their children’s safety even during early evening hours.

Police Investigating Motive and Suspects

Authorities are now reviewing security footage from nearby buildings and businesses. They are searching for two individuals seen fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting. Both suspects were last seen heading east toward Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.

Detectives believe the shooting may have been linked to an argument that turned violent but have not ruled out other motives. The police are urging anyone with information to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline.

A senior NYPD official stated that investigators are working through the night to identify the suspects and determine whether the attack was targeted or random.

Community Leaders Call for Action

Following the incident, community leaders and local activists gathered near the crime scene to call for stronger youth programs and better policing strategies. They emphasized the need for mentorship initiatives and conflict resolution workshops to steer young people away from street disputes.

Reverend Marcus Hill, a local pastor and long-time youth advocate, said, “We can’t lose another child to senseless violence. Harlem deserves streets where kids can walk home and feel safe.”

City officials also voiced concern, noting that shootings involving minors have remained a troubling trend in several areas of Manhattan. Law enforcement has launched community patrols and awareness campaigns to strengthen ties between officers and residents.

Family Pleads for Privacy and Prayers

Family members of the injured teen said they are devastated by the news and have requested privacy. Relatives confirmed that the boy is a high school student known for his love of basketball and his positive attitude toward classmates. Teachers described him as a bright student who often volunteered to help others after school.

As the teenager continues to receive medical care, friends and classmates gathered outside the hospital, lighting candles and leaving notes of support. Many said they hope for his swift recovery and an end to the violence plaguing their neighborhood.

Police Urge Public Cooperation

Officials reiterated their plea for witnesses to come forward, even anonymously, as small details could help identify those responsible. Patrol units remained in the area Thursday to reassure residents and prevent retaliatory acts.

Authorities plan to release more information as the investigation develops, including a possible description of the suspects once verified through surveillance footage. The NYPD has also increased presence near schools and recreation areas to deter further incidents.

Call for Safer Streets

The Harlem shooting has become a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in addressing youth-related crimes and gun access. Community members are urging both city authorities and parents to engage openly with teenagers about resolving conflicts peacefully.

The incident adds to a growing list of urban shootings that continue to shape discussions on public safety and neighborhood reform across New York City.

For now, the Harlem community remains on edge as the search intensifies for those behind the tragic attack.
