Shooting in Northeast Portland Leaves One Man Dead

Incident Overview

A tragic shooting in Portland’s Argay Terrace neighborhood on Monday afternoon has left one man dead. Authorities have identified the victim as 39-year-old Derrik M. Rice, a resident of Portland.

The incident occurred around 5:36 p.m. on the 4500 block of Northeast 125th Place, close to the intersection of Northeast Sandy Boulevard and 122nd Avenue.

Police Response and Investigation

Upon arrival, Portland Police officers discovered Rice suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders immediately administered life-saving measures, but despite their efforts, Rice died later at the hospital, according to police reports.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Rice’s cause of death was homicide by gunshot wound. Authorities have notified his family.

Police stated that the suspect or suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. As of now, no arrests have been made. The Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and continues to gather evidence and witness statements.

Community Impact and Street Closure

During the investigation, Northeast 125th Place was temporarily closed between Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast Prescott Drive. Officers worked through the evening to document the scene and collect forensic evidence.

The Argay Terrace neighborhood, a typically quiet residential area in Northeast Portland, was shaken by the sudden violence. Many residents expressed concern about the rise in shootings across the city and called for stronger community safety measures.

Call for Public Assistance

Investigators are urging anyone with information, surveillance footage, or potential leads related to the incident to contact the Portland Police Detective Division Homicide Unit.

Tips can be submitted anonymously, and police emphasize that public cooperation is essential in helping bring justice to Derrik Rice and his family.

Ongoing Investigation

The shooting marks yet another act of gun violence in Portland this year, adding to the city’s ongoing struggle with rising homicide rates. Detectives continue to piece together what led to the fatal encounter, hoping witnesses or nearby cameras can provide critical details about the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting.

Authorities are expected to release further updates as the investigation progresses.
