Portland, Oregon — The Portland Police Bureau announced an arrest in a long-running homicide investigation from 2022. On October 22, 2025, officers took Justin Ortega-Mejia, 28, into custody for his alleged role in the fatal shooting of Mohamed Shaani.

According to officials, Ortega-Mejia has been booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and is facing a second-degree murder charge. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that had remained unsolved for over three years.

The homicide occurred on March 27, 2022, in Portland’s Madison South neighborhood. Officers were dispatched to reports of gunfire near Northeast Milton Street and Northeast 82nd Avenue.

When police arrived, they discovered 39-year-old Mohamed Shaani suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts from emergency medical personnel, Shaani was pronounced dead at the scene.
