Shooting Leaves One Injured on Northeast Killingsworth, Neighbors Express Concern

PORTLAND, Ore. — A quiet Portland neighborhood was rattled early Sunday morning when gunfire erupted along Northeast Killingsworth Street, leaving one person injured and a parked vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), officers responded to reports of a shooting around 3:23 a.m. in the 5200 block of Northeast 24th Avenue, just off Northeast Killingsworth. When officers arrived, they found a car peppered with bullet holes and several shell casings scattered across the street.

As police secured the area and began collecting evidence, word came from a nearby hospital that a gunshot victim had walked in seeking treatment. Investigators later confirmed the person’s injuries were connected to the same shooting. Police described the wounds as non-life-threatening, and the victim is expected to recover.

Crime Scene and Response

By sunrise, yellow crime scene tape still stretched across the block as detectives worked to document evidence. Officers canvassed the area, knocking on doors and reviewing surveillance cameras in hopes of identifying the shooter. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly named.

At least two visible bullet holes were observed in a parked vehicle in front of a home, according to local reports. The early-morning violence has left residents shaken, especially those with young children.

Neighbors React with Unease

Residents described the sound of sirens and flashing lights illuminating the street just after 3 a.m. Michael, who lives a few houses away from the scene, said he awoke to the sound of police activity outside his window.

“Especially with small kids, there is concern,” he told KGW while holding his toddler daughter. “We’ve had incidents around here before, but never this close.”

Another neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said the area has seen improvement in recent years despite occasional gun-related incidents. “Things have gotten better overall,” she said, “but there’s still that one house nearby with bullet holes from a past shooting. It’s unsettling.”

Neither neighbor reported hearing gunfire before police arrived, suggesting the shots may have been fired quickly and gone unnoticed in the early morning quiet.

Ongoing Investigation

The Portland Police Bureau’s Gun Violence Reduction Team and forensic investigators continue to analyze evidence, including shell casings and potential surveillance footage. Detectives are also reviewing whether the shooting is connected to other recent incidents in Northeast Portland.

Police are urging anyone with information, including video recordings or eyewitness accounts, to contact the PPB’s non-emergency line or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Oregon.

As of now, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

The incident adds to a string of recent shootings across Portland that have reignited community concerns over public safety. For residents along Northeast Killingsworth, Sunday’s violence served as another reminder of the ongoing struggle to restore peace in neighborhoods once known for their quiet streets and close-knit communities.
